Great Spotted Woodpecker Wildlife at Cwmbiga

In our relatively short time at the farm, we have seen over 50 species of bird [list] including great spotted woodpeckers (pictured right), siskins, red kites, buzzards, goldfinches, nuthatches, greenfinches, sparrowhawks, crossbills, redstarts, jays, heron, mistle thrushes, fieldfare, spotted fly catchers, pied and grey wagtails, long eared owls and, our favourites, the many swallows who return to the farm year after year.

With the assistance of the Montgomeryshire Barn Owl Group we have installed a nesting box in an attempt to lure barn owls back to the farm.  We are hoping this will be successful next year as the local wildlife warden has told us that 7 barn owl chicks were raised successfully this year very near to the farm.

The wildlife pond at Cwmbiga In addition to the many species of birds, we have at least two species of bat together with hares, badgers, voles and lizards.  Our pond (pictured) is also alive with newts, frogs, toads, damselflies and dragonflies.

We are trying to promote the bio-diversity of the site by retaining the wetland area near the river and by planting 1250 more broad leaf trees.

Whenever you step outside at Cwmbiga you are bound to see lots of interesting wildlife ... it is a hive of wildlife activity.
