We happen to be surrounded by steam railways in Powys and the surrounding areas and so we took the opportunity to travel on one today seeing as the weather was so nice and sunny.
As we have little children, we took the option to go on a short trip from Llanfair Caereinion to Castell Caereinion and back again. You can organise your journey on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway here.
The staff members, as always, were very friendly and willing to chat about the running of the locomotives and there was plenty of whistle-blowing which kept our 3 year old happy! We also got to see the engine change from the front of the train to the back so we could go back the other way, and went over lots of little roads and farm tracks too - some of which a member of staff got off the train to wave his red flag across to warn traffic a train was coming!
Other beautiful steam railways in the Mid Wales area include the train from Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth here and the Corris Railway in Machynlleth . All of which offer spectacular scenery, restored locomotives and a great day out for all the family. Don't miss the special events put on during the holidays - Father Christmas sprinkling pocketfulls of glitter everywhere on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway's Xmas train is something our toddlers still talk about! For the serious enthusiast, you can join as a member to receive all sorts of indepth knowledge with magazines, free travel and talks. You can even buy driver experiences and drive the trains yourself! Photographers amongst you will be pleased to know that there are many scenic photo ops along all the routes so you can take the perfect picture as a souvenir of your trip.
